1787 05 23 : Letter from Kirkby Stephen about land in tillage

23 May 1787. LETTER FROM KIRKBY STEPHEN ABOUT LAND IN TILLAGE. Bundle 60, Doc 25. 19.5 cm x 15.5 cm. Remains of red seal and three small holes where it was torn open. SCOTT at Kirby on Munday I tould him that I had orders to go and look at his land and to take an estemate of the ground he had in tillage and what sort of grain it was sown with and that I would go the next day so I would have him to be at home to shew me’t he said wht did I want with his crop he thought nobody had any busness upon his ground, but I went on Teusday afternoon and he was gone to Appleby to see what Mr. HIELESS would say about it and his Son would not shew me the land and tould me yt. I had better not cum on their ground. I went round it but upon other peoples ground. I think there may be about 6 Acres of Oats or there abouts his Barley is not sown yet nor I could not see the quantity of ground not well but I thought about 2 Acres or there about there is two largest fields that was in tillage not plow’d this year but the Son would not give me any account whether they were for plowing them any more or not and there is about 3 Rood of pease, he has stop’d some strow in the hoals of the house Side where the wind had torn the thach of but it is badly done. I went to John RAIN’s the Men was none of them at home but by what I could fiend by the Wemen they are not for going of, nor pay no Rent neither, this is what account I can give you at present.
