23 Jan 1796. LETTER WITH NEWS FROM KIRKBY STEPHEN. Bundle 61, Doc 21. 37.5 cm x 23 cm, folded in half to make four pages. The two inner pages are blank. RAILTON’s & see nothing but verey well nothing like so violent as formerly but spent nothing but what you & Jno. gave them, I got 2s of Jno. I left one for ye Shot & gave poor widow Jno. neighbour ye other ––––– Mattw. BELL Jno. WILSON & Geo: RUDD came with me to Kirkby Stephen & I heard that Jam: BOUSFIELD & Nick: EDERINGTON came all to Mr. POWLEYs after I got Home Mr. HARRISON Atty. Kendal & his Servt. came by our House I believe to meet them by appointment, I have heard of nothing that was done, Mr. POWLEY was from Home ––––– Mr. HARRISON Atty. has Cut near 200 verey good Ash trees in ye Crofts nigh this town I think ye timber trees will not go high, Cowper wood & Cart wood will go at duble prise, I intend to Build next year to take little house down to make larger shall bye some if reasonable. if you had thought proper to made the Peat House 6 Yards wide by 8 yards in Length both within got two or three of theise trees for Beams & siles if under 1s per foot ––– as I came from ye groves Wednesday last theire is an Elm next Lockfoot ground in ye High end Park that has ye top blown of will be a footing Beam it is but small will not be two ––– if you make a Hogg House for HASTWELLs you will have no quietness till all your Stock farmer have got ––– I hope you got well Home the wether was favourable ––––– just 8 yards by 6 within ye petition walls to be taken of ye Peat room’s two Yards for two Horses to stand in when working theire or for two Carts to put in will be usefull either way, wide low Door in ye middle to ye South & two Peat Holes to ye North one for each end but which way you Please I want ye usefullist & cheapist ––––– my wife joins me with kind Compliments to Mrs. OLDMAN I am Sir your Most Obt.
