27 Dec 1790. LETTER ASKING PERMISSION TO ERECT A LIME KILN. Bundle 60, Doc 19. 32 cm x 20 cm, folded in half to make four pages. Red seal and corresponding hole and tear where it was torn open resulting in loss of some writing. Some corners torn off. Mr. MIDFORD 27th. Decr. 1790. – ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mr. OLDMAN Eden Hall ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dr. Sir – Penrith 27th. Decr. 90 I Recd. your letter shall be glad to wait upon you on the 18th. of next Month to settle accounts –– Last year I requested a favor of you respecting my placing a Lime Kiln in Merry Gill edge which wou’d injure S. P. M’s. property very little, such damage I wou’d readily pay & every acknowledgement –– The reason for my the repitition of this business is, when I leas’d the Colliery on Hy. Fell I had a Lime Kiln & indeed ‘till this year which consum’d all my small coals –– last year with great diffi- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ -culty I had my present Quarry work’d, but the beds are become so strong that they cannot be got without great difficulty – as I have promis’d if possible to supply Mr. STEPHENSON & several others with Lime this ensuing season it is my wish so to do, in case I cannot get a situation the Colliery will be of no use to me nor to any person whatas the coals are only calculated for an advantage in Lime – I have spoke with Mr. DAWSON who says he is willing to take his part of Damages in Lime, & I think not alone that S. P. M’s. property wou’d not ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ sustain much detriment, because the place is an entire rock adjoining nearly to the Lane leading to Hy. Fell – I will be much oblig’d to you for an answer the first oppertunity as it will be high time to erect a Kiln – you ma[ ] depend upon every po[ ] damage to be amply paid & with every acknowledgement, the damage may rest with yourself – The 18th. Jary. will be too late a determination, I am with Compts. to Mrs. OLDMAN with every compliment of the Season yr. H.b.le S.v.t [signed] W. MIDFORD
