April 1796 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ at The Crown Inn Penrith ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Morland April 24th. 1796 Dear Sir, I had yours. a day or two since inclosing Mr. BENSONs. He & I have been much acquainted for many years & on terms of Intimacy. He calld. here some time ago & spent the Day with me on acct. of the critical Situation we stand in between Mr. EELS & Ld. Lonsdale, who are said to be in Treaty about this Estate. We are rather cautious of furnishing any Information or stating any sort of Opinion either about the Commons or Old Lands, as to Quantity or Value. I coud. wish you to waive as far as you can in Decency & offer the following true Suggestion, “That you surveyed one Common not in dispute to between 3 & 400 Acres, That the other is all in dispute, That you are not much acquainted with the Old Enclosed Lands, & that your Information on this Subject chiefly comes from the Vicar of Morland, Who is able to give very minute Information”. or in Words to this or the like Effect. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I hope the Pleasure of seeing you shortly by some Means or other In the mean time accept yourself, & present my sincere Wellwishes to Mr.Wn. & also be so kind as give the inclosed to Mr GRAVES, it will save me the trouble of writing to him Yrs. as ever, & very truly [signed] J.
