1790 07 06 : Letter with news from Kirkoswald
06 Jul 1790. LETTER WITH NEWS FROM KIRKOSWALD. Bundle 61, Doc 42. 27.5 cm x 19 cm, folded in half to make four pages. Remains of black seal and corresponding hole where it was torn open. July 6th 90 ~ Sir The other day I saw Mr. MONKHOUSE of Scalehouses – who expresses himself thus ––– Lammas is drawing on when Mr. OLDMAN will expect his rent for the Colliery, this I’m. certainly bound to perform, but wish you would let him know that I look upon a Man’s word equally as binding as a Stamp –– Sometime since Mr. OLDMAN promisd. me to come & see the Colliery – Mr. WILLIAMSON was to be of the party – Mr. BIRBECK also –– perhaps some more –– Shd. they not come according to promise, I dont. know whether I shall reach K.Osd. on the Rent day or not –– If you think of Humouring the Old Gentleman please let me have a Line that I may give him timely Notice ––––– I am Sir yr. obedient Hble Servt. POWLEY that Miss Julia AGLIONBY wishes him to come & put in the Pump immediately –– otherwise ‘twill put a Stop to the Mason work –––––––––––––– Mr. BOWMAN is wanting a Pump tree for the Wood End I think there is one, that was intended for Joists, in Cockshawhill, if you have not occasion for it at Fogclose, I Imagine he will speak to you abt. it as I wrote him this Morning –––––––
