1795 10 21 : Letter with news from Kirkby Stephen
21 Oct 1795. LETTER WITH NEWS FROM KIRKBY STEPHEN. Bundle 61, Doc 26. 33 cm x 20.5 cm, folded in half to make four pages. The two middle pages are blank. Red seal with corresponding hole where it was torn open, without loss of writing. Some small scribbled calculations on the back not transcribed. John DAWSON 21st. BRADLEY ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Kirkby Stephen 21th Octr. 1795 Dear Sir I wrote to Stockton last Week & have got a Letter Lead is 18£ - 10s pr. Fodder which I think of sending of all I have in hand directly as fast as I can get it away I do not know yet what ye carrage will cost yet I hope it will Clear 17£ at Hartley we have got ye Mill to going to day but have not quite done ye Chimney yet ye wether will not allowe ye men to work but is within days work have got it finished onto ye rock & it carres smook well ––––– ye wheel Axeltrae must have 6 or 7 piggs Lead melted into a hoop for to keep a Ballance for ye wheel in ye Bellow house to put on till a new Axeltrae be got readey which should be next sap time ––––– ye new Bellows does verey well I hope theay & ye Chimney will clear themselv’s in a year or two if all do well we have had no water for nothing & ye springs do not come in yet Seloron’s well is dry & Ino. HARKER & Thos. HASTWELL your farmer wants ye Birkit Minners to give over hushing for theay mudding Hartley beck. I told them theay had not earned aney thing this Summer & could not live of nothing & theay might get what theay pleased for going Quarter Mile which I had done before on ye like Occation when no hushing was done ––––– my kind Compliments to Mrs. OLDMAN I am Sir Your’s &c [signed] Jno.
